Technical Risk Management

AI-assisted development introduces technical risks that are distinct from traditional software engineering risks. These include dependency on AI model providers, reliability concerns with non-deterministic tools, vendor lock-in at the development process level, and new patterns of technical debt accumulation. As CTO, you must identify, assess, and mitigate these risks as part of your overall engineering risk management strategy. This section complements the executive-level Risk & Governance Summary with technical depth.

Risk Taxonomy

Category 1: Dependency Risks

Risk 1.1: AI Tool Unavailability

AI coding tools are cloud services that can experience outages. When they go down, developer productivity drops to pre-AI levels, but sprint commitments were planned at AI-augmented velocity.

Category 2: Model Reliability Risks

Risk 2.3: Confident Incorrectness

AI generates code that is syntactically correct, well-structured, and confidently presented but logically wrong. This is the most dangerous reliability risk because it is the hardest to detect.
