Numbers alone do not tell the story. Frame your board presentation using this narrative structure:

The Risk Narrative
Frame risk proactively, not reactively:

Visualization Best Practices
Do
- Show trends, not snapshots. Board members need trajectory, not just current state. Always show at least 4 quarters of data.
- Include targets. Every metric should show the target value alongside the actual value.
- Use traffic light indicators. Green/yellow/red provides instant assessment for busy board members.
- Contextualize. Show industry benchmarks alongside your data (see Competitive Landscape).
- Lead with outcomes. Start with business value (ROI, features, market impact), then show the supporting operational metrics.
Do Not
- Avoid engineering jargon. "Velocity," "story points," "sprint" -- translate these into business terms.
- Avoid vanity metrics. "Lines of code generated by AI" is not meaningful to the board.
- Avoid false precision. Report ranges and trends, not decimals. "Productivity improved approximately 25%" is more honest than "Productivity improved 24.7%."
- Avoid blame. If metrics are below target, focus on root cause analysis and mitigation, not on who is responsible.
